Born in Warsaw, Szmit studied Experimental Design at the
University of Art in Linz. Periods of residence in Berlin and Tallinn.
She specializes in animated film, video and installation.
Using the methods of collection, repetition and reduction Szmit
attempts to bring things into relationship with one another on their
structural plane.
The motifs which run through her work are distanced observation, the
concept of longing, the grey areas between action and stagnancy or
definitions of “interesting” versus “boring”.
In her present projects Szmit concentrates on specific words or
fragments of texts torn from their context. The artist’s intention in
all this is to seize the “big picture” diagrammatically, to suggest
complexity and scientific seriousness – even when the result may turn
out rather to be obscure, random and incomplete.
