Claire Weetman
Liverpool

trading station

Traces form the focus of much of Claire's work, where she uses line to respond to and record movement through spaces. Drawn marks record the motion of people on everyday journeys - deliberate strokes chart transient and fleeting moments. Using traditional drawing media alongside video recording and projection, Claire creates interventions in public spaces such as streets and public squares which interact and engage a passing audience.  Line features in a broad range of ways, including graphite or ink drawings on paper or glass through to her more conceptual use of water on stone as seen in her recent Watermark work.

Claire Weetman lives in St Helens (UK), she works with communities to produce artworks, participates in residencies, exhibits regionally, nationally and internationally and often makes work in the public realm. Claire studied Fine Art at Liverpool John Moores University.

riposte
Predominantly using line in her works, Claire Weetman responds to and records movement through spaces. Drawn marks record the motion of people on everyday journeys - deliberate strokes chart transient and fleeting moments. To capture these moments, Weetman often works directly in public spaces, placing herself in the centre of movement.

Works produced as part of riPOSTe look at journeys made by people - crossing bridges, a bus ride, walking along a street or across a city square. Various methods are employed by the artist including filming moving people, letting a drawn line be directly affected by movement or placing structures in public spaces to alter and record the movement of pedestrians.

The Passing, Watching, Waiting, Following drawings were created using film, projection and interaction with the public as they pass the artist documenting their movements. Created in both Liverpool and Linz, these interventions into public spaces confront the audience with the process of creating artwork, allowing them to influence and change the artist’s drawing - raising questions over who is creating the artwork - the artist or the passer-by?

Claire Weetman lives in North West England delivering community art projects, residencies and public art works. She studied Fine Art at Liverpool John Moores University.
